Is Roblox Safe for Kids? Lawsuits Expose Major Dangers
The massively popular online gaming world of Roblox is facing a severe legal backlash, with a fresh wave of lawsuits filed this week claiming the company has failed to protect its massive user base of children from sexual predators and inappropriate content. The allegations paint a disturbing picture of a platform that critics say prioritizes growth over the safety of its most vulnerable users.
One of the most recent and alarming complaints was lodged in a Northern California federal court. It details the story of a 10-year-old girl in Michigan who was allegedly targeted by an adult predator masquerading as a child on the platform. According to the lawsuit, the man groomed the young girl, convincing her to exchange sexually explicit images, which left her with significant mental health struggles, including severe anxiety.

A Growing Wave of Legal Action
This case is not an isolated incident but rather the latest in a coordinated legal assault against the gaming giant. The Dolman Law Group, the firm behind the Michigan case, has been aggressively pursuing Roblox, filing five similar lawsuits since July in courts across California, Georgia, and Texas, with a sixth one reportedly filed on Friday.
The legal pressure is also coming from state governments. This week, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill launched a lawsuit against Roblox, citing major child safety concerns. The company is also feeling the heat from Washington, as politicians like California Representative Ro Khanna are publicly calling for Roblox to implement stronger protections and urging citizens to sign petitions demanding action. These legal challenges argue that what Roblox markets as a safe digital playground is, in reality, a dangerous environment for children.
Inside the Allegations: How Predators Exploit the Platform
Lawyers argue that the very structure of Roblox can be manipulated by those with malicious intent. The lawsuits claim that predators use the platform’s social features to identify and groom underage users. A key element highlighted in the legal filings is the use of Roblox’s in-game currency, “Robux.”
The federal lawsuit alleges that predators financially exploit their victims on the platform itself. They might offer children Robux as a reward for sending explicit photos or, in a twisted form of extortion, demand Robux from victims to prevent the release of compromising images they have already obtained. This creates a disturbing cycle where, the lawsuit claims, Roblox could be profiting from transaction fees related to these predatory activities.
These accusations are further supported by a Hindenburg Research report from last year. The report found that researchers, posing as children, were easily able to access inappropriate and sexually themed games on the platform, some of which were disturbingly modeled after the crimes of convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Roblox’s Defense and New Safety Measures
Roblox has forcefully pushed back against the claims. In a statement, company spokesperson Kadia Koroma called the assertion that the company would deliberately endanger its users “categorically untrue.” She emphasized that while no system is perfect, Roblox has invested heavily in robust safety features, such as blocking the sharing of personal information and preventing users from sending images to each other directly within the platform. The company maintains that bad actors actively work to lure users away from Roblox to other, less moderated platforms where they can more easily exploit them.
In response to the mounting criticism, Roblox has announced several new safety initiatives. In early August, the company revealed it is deploying artificial intelligence systems designed to more effectively detect and flag “child endangerment communications” and alert law enforcement. More recently, Roblox stated it is taking steps to restrict access to certain virtual environments, such as private bedrooms, to users who are at least 17 years old or have verified their age. The company is also testing a new age-verification system that would allow users to confirm their age by submitting a government-issued photo ID.
Financial and Political Fallout
The growing legal trouble is hitting the company where it hurts: its wallet. Following the news of the latest lawsuits, the San Mateo-based company’s stock price took a significant hit, closing down over 6% to $117.34 on Friday. This market reaction shows that investors are taking these allegations seriously, worried about the potential financial and reputational damage.
The legal teams suing Roblox argue that simple, common-sense solutions have been ignored. They suggest the company could implement better age verification like facial recognition, provide clearer warnings to parents about the real dangers, and assign a higher, more appropriate age rating to its app.
Matthew Dolman, a managing partner at the law firm leading the charge, described the current state of the platform in stark terms. “This is just the wild west,” he said in an interview. “It’s like a hunting ground for predators.” He contends that the company is misleading not only its young users and their parents but also its own shareholders about how safe the platform truly is. The broader issue of “sextortion” is a growing crisis, with a report from the child safety nonprofit Thorn finding that nearly one in five teenagers has been a victim, highlighting that popular gaming platforms remain a key battleground for child safety.
