Sam Altman, the entrepreneur behind ChatGPT, a renowned AI-powered conversational tool, expressed his concerns, stating, “I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong,” during his address to a Senate committee.

In light of these concerns, Altman emphasized the importance of government intervention to mitigate the potential negative impacts and prevent the misuse of AI.
ChatGPT, along with other AI-powered chatbots, possesses the ability to provide instant responses to user prompts across a wide range of topics, whether it’s generating an essay on Shakespeare or offering a curated list of travel recommendations for a specific destination.

In March, Microsoft introduced an updated version of Bing search engine that incorporates responses generated by ChatGPT’s latest version, GPT-4. This integration aims to enhance the search experience by leveraging the capabilities of advanced AI language models. Google, a competing search engine, made its own move in February by launching the Bard AI model, further highlighting the growing trend of incorporating AI technologies into search engine functionalities.

However, concerns regarding bias, false information, and other potentially damaging responses have been highlighted by programs like ChatGPT and Bard.

“GPT-4 is more likely than any other widely deployed model of similar capability to respond helpfully and truthfully and to reject harmful requests,” Altman said on Tuesday.

“However, we think that regulatory intervention by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models,” he continued, recommending the implementation of licenses or safety regulations necessary for the use of AI models.

In recent months, there has been a notable rise in recognition of the potential risks associated with AI, prompted by significant advancements such as ChatGPT.

In response to these concerns, an open letter signed by numerous influential figures in the tech industry, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, called for a temporary suspension of AI system development for a period of six months. The letter also emphasized the need for enhanced government oversight to ensure responsible deployment and monitoring of AI technologies.

“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” the letter stated.

A second alarm was raised by Elon Musk last month when he told Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson that “there is definitely a path to AI dystopia, which is to train AI to be deceptive.”

OpenAI, which started out as a nonprofit organization in 2015, has experienced rapid growth and now operates as a for-profit business.

Microsoft declared in January that it will be investing $10 billion in OpenAI. The action strengthened Microsoft and OpenAI’s long-standing partnership, which started with a $1 billion investment four years ago.

It’s a great time to be working on artificial intelligence, but as the field develops, Altman said on Tuesday, “We recognize that people are concerned about how it could disrupt the way we live.’ We are, too.
