For many, October is the month of trick or treating and getting candy. But not too many people know that this month is dedicated to a topic that, if ignored, can be much more terrifying: cybersecurity.

In today’s technology-driven world, the cyber threat landscape is constantly evolving. You see it in the news and unfortunately sometimes hear from family, friends, and acquaintances on how they got phished, scammed, or hacked.

It’s a dangerous cyber world we live in and the list of potential threats can seem endless. This is why protecting our data and browsing the Internet safely is an absolute necessity.

The thing is, many cyberattacks that we consider far from our reality could be closer than we think. In short, we are all at risk.

CSAM2021

This is why campaigns such as Cyber Safe Awareness Month (CSAM) here in Canada and the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) in the United States, play a vital role in helping individuals and businesses understand the risks and consequences of cybercriminal activity.

Throughout October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2021, initiatives will seek to raise awareness, change behavior, and provide accessible resources to educate people and businesses on how to stay safe online.

In doing so, the campaigns also highlight a series of simple steps that we can all take to protect our personal and financial data.

To achieve their goals, campaigns often revolve around various themes that are part of cybersecurity and are divided into themes. In Canada, for example, the four main themes this year are as follows:

CSAM2021

Week 1: Staying in touch (Oct 4-8)

  • Avoiding phishing scams
  • Keeping private information private
  • Using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication
CSAM2021

Week 2: Sharing special moments (Oct 11-15)

  • Staying safe while file sharing
  • Using anti-virus software to prevent malware
  • Storing and backing up data
CSAM2021

Week 3: Working and networking (Oct 18-22)

  • Using Wi-Fi safely
  • Setting up a secure home network
  • Workplace- and career-specific cyber threats
CSAM2021

Week 4: Families and businesses (Oct 25-29)

  • Running a cyber-safe business
  • Teaching kids the basics of cyber safety
  • Keeping your family safe online

All these campaigns have a common message:

“cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and is universal.”

Each of us has a role to play to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals. And advocacy campaigns like CSAM and NCSAM are vital to educate and raise awareness about the importance of ensuring you and I are safe online.

Rhyno Cybersecurity is pleased to support these initiatives on both sides of the border by providing free cybersecurity resources and advice to help you become more aware of the cares and threats present in cyberspace.
