Google has unveiled a number of privacy and security enhancements for Android smartphones, including a sophisticated set of tools designed to protect users’ devices and data in the event of theft. These features are expected to be available through an update to Google Play services for smartphones running Android version 10 and later. They aim to secure data before, during, and after a theft attempt.
One notable feature is the ‘private space,’ which allows users to store private apps in a dedicated section that can be secured with a unique PIN and kept hidden.

Additionally, Google is introducing an extra layer of security by requiring users to enter their PIN, password, or biometric data before they can modify sensitive device settings. This includes actions like turning off ‘Find My Device,’ extending the screen timeout, or accessing important account and device settings.
This includes actions such as attempting to change the device’s PIN, disable theft protection, or access passkeys. Another addition is an improved factory reset process that renders a stolen device inoperable.
Suzanne Frey, Google’s Vice President of Product for Trust & Growth, explained, ‘With this update, if a thief forces a reset on the stolen device, they won’t be able to set it up again without the device or Google account credentials.’ She added, ‘This makes a stolen device unsellable and reduces incentives for phone theft.’
Google also announced the incorporation of an AI-powered feature that can detect suspicious activities, such as abrupt motion, and proactively protect users’ data by automatically locking the device’s screen when it detects that a phone has been stolen and the thief is trying to flee or drive away.
In addition, the Theft Detection Lock and an Offline Device Lock setting will be available for devices running Android 10 and higher. The latter locks the device screen if a malicious actor tries to disconnect the phone for an extended period.
Other enhancements include the ability to remotely lock a phone’s screen with a phone number and security challenge from any device, as well as the option to mark a device as missing for easier tracking via Find My Device.
This gives you time to retrieve your account details and access additional useful features in Find My Device, such as sending a command for a full factory reset to completely wipe the device,” stated Suzanne Frey.
